American Express and JCB confirm date for 3D Secure 2.1 retiring

Aug 2, 2023
Stacey Ruggles

Checkout.com would like to remind you of the card schemes' dates for retiring 3D Secure Version 2.1 globally:

  • Mastercard - September 24, 2024
  • Visa - September 25, 2024
  • JCB – September 26, 2024
  • American Express - September 30, 2024

You will not be able to authenticate transactions using EMV 3DS 2.1 after these dates. Note that Cartes Bancaires does not intend to sunset support for EMV 3DS 2.1 in 2024.

How we are helping you prepare

The good news is that Checkout.com offers an Authentication Solution that supports 3DS 2.2 for Visa, Mastercard and Cartes Bancaires.

JCB, American Express, and other card schemes will all be supported shortly after our next planned updates.

Our flexible authentication solution utilizes machine learning to optimize your customers’ experience and maximize your approval rates.

Key benefits include:

  • Smart optimization powered by rule setting and machine learning
  • Pre-built (hosted) or customizable UI (non-hosted) authentication flow
  • Exemptions handling
  • More detailed granular data reporting
  • Support for PAN, Token, and Network Tokenization credentials

You can read more about our authentication solution here.

If you use your own solution, or one provided by a third party, please check that this will be upgraded to EMV 3DS 2.2 before 2.1 is retired.
