Create MOTO payments
Last updated: January 19, 2023
A mail order or telephone order (MOTO) payment is a transaction carried out by mail order or over the phone. These payments carry an increased risk to your business in the following ways:
- MOTO payments don't pass through authentication - as you can't confirm the identity of your customer for orders received by mail or over the phone, it's harder to defend the order against chargebacks. This means you're likely to end up covering the loss.
- Responsibility for restitution if you've accepted a fraudulent payment.
- Higher processing rates per transaction - credit card processors pass the increased risk associated with processing MOTO payments on to the merchant, resulting in higher fees.
To help avoid the risks associated with MOTO payments, consider using Payment Links instead.
MOTO payment eligibility will be determined at processing channel level during onboarding. To be able to create manual payments or payment links, you will need the create payments permission. If you need to create MOTO payments for a disabled processing channel, contact us at [email protected].
To create a MOTO payment:
- Sign in to the Dashboard.
- Go to Payments > Processing > All payments.
